Reminder that our hemlock treatment training is May 8 and registration is open now. A minimum of 15 attendees is needed to hold the event; the training is also open to people in Laurel Falls, Glenridge, Panthertown, and High Hemlock. Please personally invite residents you know in those neighborhoods. Since the Chinquapin hemlocks have that nasty woolly adlegid bug, neighboring areas are likely to, also. It makes sense to try to expand the treatment area. HWA kills hemlocks. Here’s a link to the March article about HWA and the training. https://www.chinquapinowners.com/post/catching-up-treating-our-hemlocks-2-26-2025

The bourbon pick on March 25 was a success. About 16 people gathered to taste and analyze 4 different Southern Grace Conviction bourbons; barrel #2 was the pick, a single barrel Conviction. Those observing the pick process enjoyed several wines, bringing the convivial event to about 25 Chinquapiners. The meal of ribs, salads, charcuterie board, bourbon bread pudding and more filled everyone up. The barrel pick will be bottled in May and have a special Chinquapin label on the bottles. If you want a

bottle or two (more?), the Cashiers ABC store will have it by direct shipment from the distillery. Let Allen Dobson know how many bottles you want so enough are shipped. Adobson1600@gmail.com. Southern Grace Distillery will also have it for sale on site in Mt. Pleasant, NC. There is no difference in price wherever it’s bought—at the ABC store or at the distillery.
Calendar--while not an exhaustive list of events, the Calendar on this website does have several local events listed & sources to find local events. Chinquapin social events—first one is May 24, there will be 5 this season. The schedule hasn’t been sent out yet from the Waterfront office/Renee Owen. Pickle ball info is on the Calendar page, too.
Stuff You Need to Know---It's under the Owner Resources tab. It has troubleshooting info and points you in the right directions for various needs, including services in the area.

Maps & Trails--Drop down menu error when a cursor is placed over Maps & Trails tab--DON'T use the drop down menu. Click on the words Maps & Trails to open the page. On the page, there are 2 buttons; one says Chinquapin Trails Site, the other says Panthertown Valley Information (scroll to see that one). Click those buttons to reach the relevant info. Download trail maps before hiking. Let Dave Barnett know about any trail conditions you notice on a hike.
Bears have been out for a few weeks. Walk around your property as if you’re a bear, to spot the things of interest to them. Birdfeeders, spilled seed, vegetable garden (a basic electric wire around it keeps them out), trash can/bags, construction dumpsters, food trash in vehicles…By the way, bears like ants—they locate them by the smell the ants produce---that smell, to a bear, is similar to the smell of the foam insulation in hot tub covers and other items, so a bear might tear that up thinking there are ants. Bears are SMART and remember where they got easy food last year. They’ll return, looking for it, and, unfortunately, teach their cubs where those sources are. Keep ‘em wild! Make them use their natural foods and eating habits. https://bearwise.org/what-bears-do-in-april/ Bearwise.org is a good site to find out what to do if you encounter a bear, how to bearproof property, and find bear information.
Information, please!---Call Renee or Jane at the sales office (Trading Post) for questions about getting a mailbox, gate codes, getting onto their email lists, social events, infrastructure issues, building-related issues, or anything to do with the neighborhood.
